What we believe

Anyone can have an idea. The craft is making it matter.

Every touchpoint is an experience. Every experience is the brand.

Get it right and people don't just notice you. They remember you.

MBD has been crafting ideas into experiences for decades. A few things we hold to be true:

01

Anyone can have an idea. The craft is making it matter.

+

This is the belief the other three rest on.

Ideas are everywhere. They are the cheapest thing in the room, and almost everyone has them. What is rare, and what actually creates value, is the craft of turning one into something real: something people can see, feel and remember. That is the whole job, and it is far harder than having the idea in the first place. It is why creativity and technology have to keep challenging each other, why an experience has to be felt and not just noticed, and why every touchpoint now shapes the brand. The beliefs that follow are all facets of this one. The idea is the easy part. Making it matter is the craft, and the craft is what we do.

02

Technology inspires creativity, and creativity challenges technology.

+

Neither one leads. They take turns.

Technology without an idea is just expensive plumbing. An idea without the means to build it is just a wish. The interesting work happens where the two meet, and keep pushing each other forward. A new tool opens a door nobody knew was there; a bold enough idea demands a tool that doesn't exist yet, so you go and build it. We have always worked in that space: close enough to the technology to know what it can really do, and far enough from it to remember it was never the point. The idea is the point. Technology is how you give the experience a body.

03

Your first kiss.

+

You don't remember what you were told. You remember how it felt.

Think about your first kiss. You can't quote it. You can't summarise it. But you can still feel it. That is the difference between information and experience, and the difference between a brand people put up with and a brand people love. The best experiences aren't read or watched. They're felt. They lodge somewhere deeper than memory, and they stay there. So that's the bar we set ourselves: not "did they notice it?" but "will they still feel it tomorrow?"

04

The experience economy.

+

Everything is brand experience now. Everything.

People stopped buying products a long time ago. They buy how a thing makes them feel, what it says about them, what it means. And every touchpoint shapes that meaning, not just the ad or the launch. The website. The receipt. The unboxing. The call centre at 9pm when something's gone wrong. The tool an employee opens every morning. The way the people inside a company treat each other. It is all brand experience, whether consumer-facing or deep inside the organisation, physical or digital, designed or left to chance. The only real question is whether you're shaping it on purpose. That's what we help brands, agencies and marketing companies do: design the whole experience, everywhere it's felt, and make it matter.

Our point of view on AI

AI can elevate an experience. It can't have the idea. That stays human.

We use AI to make experiences faster, richer and more personal, to sharpen the craft and stretch what's possible. But we never let it replace the thinking that makes an idea worth building in the first place.

Human intelligence leads. AI follows. In that order.

HI+ AI

Three ways we
make it matter.

What we do

Our experience, building your experience.

Brand experience

We build the experience where an idea becomes something people can see, feel and remember: a campaign, an activation, a product, a brand world. From first concept to live execution, in the real world and at scale.

Includes
  • Experience strategy & innovation
  • Creative & concept development
  • Immersive, retail & event experiences
  • Creative technology & production
  • Branded content & film
Consultancy experience, our experience building yours

A brilliant idea is fragile. We build the experience that carries it through the messy middle to a working reality: the AI, the workflows and the right process that take it from a pilot to something that ships. Human intelligence, with AI at its side.

Includes
  • AI workflow design & integration
  • Operating-model & ways-of-working redesign
  • Experience & service transformation
  • From pilot to production, navigating the messy middle
  • Capability building & team enablement
Community experience

The best experiences don't stop at the audience. They build a community around the brand: the events, platforms and moments that turn customers into people who belong, and keep them coming back.

Includes
  • Events & live experiences
  • Community & platform design
  • Membership & belonging
  • Content & culture
  • Partnerships & collaboration

One idea. Every touchpoint.

Total Experience

A brand as its audience actually meets it: every touchpoint, physical and digital, designed as one system with a single organising idea at the centre. Not another ad, but a total experience, for businesses that want to make a difference.

The organising idea

Every strong brand is held together by one idea that organises everything else: what the product should feel like, what the store smells like, what the emails sound like, what the founder says on stage. Most businesses don't have one; they have a logo, a tagline and a set of habits.

Without an organising idea, touchpoints are just a to-do list. With one, they become a single, compounding experience. Every idea we set must pass five tests: true, distinct, elastic, actionable, durable.

Physical

Where the brand has a body

Product and pack, place and space, people and service, moments and media. The half of the brand people trust most, because it can be touched.

Digital

Where the brand has a signal

Owned, social, commerce, discovery and service: the same idea, rendered at the speed and personalisation only software allows.

Phygital

Where the worlds join

The hand-offs: pack to platform, click to collect, event to feed. Most brands drop the baton here. We design the baton.

Why MBD can walk
you across

The Bridge · Thirty Years, Seven Tracks
Richard Hollingum, founder of MBD
Richard HollingumFounder, MBD · London & Auckland

We help businesses cross from the old model of marketing to the new one. One organising idea, applied as a total experience across every touchpoint, and proven at every step. Richard Hollingum founded MBD to be the bridge, because he has spent thirty years on both sides of it.

The craft economy from the inside: what it actually takes to turn Levi's, British Airways and Land Rover ideas into finished work. Not the strategy deck, but the delivery. This is where a respect for the idea and the machine was forged, in the building when creativity was the business.

Leaving the cathedral to build a chapel: a $9M agency, two offices, every payroll made. New business wasn't a slide, it was survival. The lesson: commerce and creativity aren't in tension: one funds the other, and an operator has to hold both.

Hand-picked to merge two cultures across Europe: a major multi-market portfolio held steady, zero disruption. The first time the role was explicitly the bridge: between an acquiring company and an acquired one, between old ways of working and new.

Publicis's content business built from nothing to $21M across four APAC markets. Proof of origination, not just operation: the playbook written in Paris, replicated market by market.

WPP's best agencies, one client, one operating model. The hardest bridge of all: getting rival cultures to ship as one. Participation, before it had a name.

When AI arrived: not a thought piece, but a product, taken to commercial pilot, learning what LLMs, embeddings and agents actually change by shipping them. The tuition most consultants only talk about, paid in full. Building taught the lesson that runs through everything MBD does: AI doesn't replace creativity, it's how creativity gets applied.

Everything converges here. Touchpoints multiplying, media collapsing into experience, AI expanding what one team can make. The old agency model can't hold it. Total Experience can: one organising idea running through product, brand, experience and participation, proven at every step. We built the playbook because we've lived every phase of it.

Most people in this industry know one part of the system: the idea, the machine, or the technology. We've spent thirty years inside all three. Clients don't need another opinion about the future. They need someone who can walk them across to it.
